Zelensky confirmed the attack after a briefing from Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky on Friday.
“Tonight, Ukraine’s Defense Forces operated in the direction of an oil refinery in Yaroslavl, this is about 700 kilometers [435 miles] from our territory,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
The Yaroslavl region lies roughly 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Moscow and hosts infrastructure connected to Russia’s domestic fuel network.
Earlier on Friday, Yaroslavl regional governor Mikhail Yevrayev said the region had come under a Ukrainian drone attack.
“Our region was subjected to an attack by Ukrainian [unmanned aerial vehicles] UAVs,” Yevrayev said.
He added that traffic was temporarily closed on the highway exit from Yaroslavl toward Moscow “for safety reasons,” while emergency services worked at the scene.
No casualties were reported.
Following this, the Russian Telegram channel Shot reported that local residents heard around 20 explosions in the area and said a drone strike caused a fire at an industrial facility.
