Confidence: 95%

Key Takeaways

  • Ukrainian SBU Center for Special Operations “A” conducted the attack.
  • Targeted location was Henicheska Hirka, near the Sea of Azov.
  • A Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile system was destroyed.
  • Reported casualties: approximately 100 Russian personnel (killed and wounded).
  • The FSB headquarters targeted suggests a focus on disrupting Russian command and control.

Why It Matters

The destruction of a Pantsir-S1 system demonstrates a vulnerability in Russian air defense capabilities and potentially opens avenues for increased Ukrainian drone operations in the region. Successful strikes against FSB facilities indicate Ukraine’s ability to gather intelligence and target key Russian security infrastructure, impacting their operational effectiveness. This operation reinforces Ukraine’s strategy of asymmetric warfare and long-range precision strikes.

Ukrainian drones struck a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) headquarters in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported.

According to his post on Telegram, Thursday’s strike caused around 100 Russian casualties, including both killed and wounded troops, and targeted the village of Henicheska Hirka, near the coast of the Sea of Azov.

The area has remained under Russian occupation since the early months of Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Special forces from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) Center for Special Operations “A” carried out the attack.

“A headquarters of Russian FSB officers was hit, and a Pantsir-S1 air defense system was destroyed on our temporarily occupied territory,” Zelensky reported.

The Pantsir-S1 is a Russian self-propelled surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery system used to protect military and strategic facilities from aircraft, drones and incoming missiles.

“Russians must feel that they have to end this war,” Zelensky said. “Ukraine’s medium- and long-range sanctions will continue to work.”
