Ukrainian drones seize initiative in war against Russia - Expert | RBC-Ukraine

AI Analysis

Ukrainian forces have achieved a strategic initiative in drone warfare, focusing on disrupting Russian logistics and artillery support through deep strikes. The 413th Unmanned Systems Forces Regiment 'Raid' has reportedly struck over 7,000 targets, exceeding the impact of Russia’s Rubicon unit. Success is attributed to skilled operators adapting existing technology rather than relying on advanced hardware.

Confidence: 95%

Key Takeaways

  • Ukraine has shifted to a strategy of utilizing drones as a primary tool for battlefield success, specifically targeting Russian logistics.
  • The 'Raid' Regiment has established a 'mirror kill zone' 10-15km deep, disrupting Russian supply lines and destroying vehicles including locomotives and T-80BV tanks.
  • Ukraine’s success isn’t driven by revolutionary drone technology, but by the skill and adaptability of its drone operators.
  • The 'Raid' Regiment has reportedly destroyed over 7,000 enemy targets in under two years.
  • Ukraine is developing AI-powered drones for intercepting Shahed drones (mentioned as a related development).

Why It Matters

This demonstrates a successful asymmetric warfare strategy where a technologically disadvantaged force can effectively counter a larger, conventionally equipped adversary. The focus on logistics disruption highlights a shift towards a more attritional warfare approach, aiming to degrade Russia’s ability to sustain operations. This model could be studied by other nations facing similar power imbalances.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces have seized the initiative in the drone warfare domain. Drones have become the main tool for systematically destroying Russian logistics and artillery, states Ivan Kyrychevskyi, a serviceman of the 413th Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS) Regiment Raid and an arms expert, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

According to the expert, drones are systematically destroying enemy logistics. This significantly limits Russia's use of artillery, which was previously considered one of the occupying army's key strengths.

"We have not only seized the initiative from the Russians in the use of drones, but also adopted the strategy of turning drones themselves into a tool for success on the battlefield," he emphasized.

Destruction of Russian heavy equipment and locomotives

Ukrainian drone operators have created a mirror kill zone stretching 10–15 kilometers deep, effectively complicating supply operations for Russian troops on the front line.

According to Kyrychevskyi, thanks to the efforts of Ukraine's Defense Forces units, including the Raid Regiment, the Russian troops' heavy vehicles and even railway locomotives are being systematically destroyed deep behind the front line.

As an example, in mid-November, Ukrainian troops thwarted a Russian mechanized assault near the border of the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions. They successfully destroyed rare Russian T-80BV tanks equipped with a distinctive protective structure that made them resemble porcupines.

In less than two years since its establishment, the Raid Regiment has struck at least 7,000 enemy targets. According to Kyrychevskyi, this surpasses the achievements of Russia's heavily publicized Rubicon unit both in terms of scale and significance.

Secret behind Ukrainian drones

According to Kyrychevskyi, the turning point and the accumulation of positive effects in drone warfare are the result of systematic efforts at all levels over the past nine months to a year. The key factor behind this success is not so much the technology itself, but the people operating it.

"Ukraine is demonstrating success in the use of drones on the battlefield not because groundbreaking technologies have been invented, but because there are determined individuals who can turn virtually any drone into a lethal weapon," he concluded.
