AI Analysis

Ukrainian firm Phantom Defense is developing a comprehensive counter-UAS ecosystem, including radar for Shahed drone detection, EW systems, and hard-kill solutions like interceptor drones. The company emphasizes combat-proven effectiveness, leveraging frontline feedback for rapid development and refinement, and recently secured a contract for 8,000 interceptor drones.

Confidence: 95%

Key Takeaways

  • Phantom Defense is building a multi-layered counter-UAS system encompassing detection, soft-kill (EW), and hard-kill capabilities.
  • The company is specifically developing a radar system to counter Shahed-type drones, indicating a focus on addressing a key threat.
  • Phantom Defense’s development is driven by direct experience from the Krynky front, employing both engineers and veteran military personnel.
  • Systems undergo rigorous testing – lab, field, and military unit trials – with a focus on environmental resilience and combat performance.
  • Ukraine is bolstering its domestic defense industry through initiatives like the Ukrainian Council of Gunsmiths and the CORPUS procurement coalition.

Why It Matters

The development of a robust, domestically-produced counter-UAS capability is critical for Ukraine's defense against Russia's drone warfare tactics. Phantom Defense's focus on real-world combat effectiveness and rapid iteration provides a competitive advantage and reduces reliance on external suppliers. This also highlights a broader trend of nations investing in indigenous counter-drone technology.

Ukrainian company Phantom Defense, which specializes in counter-drone systems and electronic warfare (EW) solutions, is working on the creation of a comprehensive ecosystem for countering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

A company representative responsible for development and sales told Ukrinform about the initiative during the SAHA 2026 defense exhibition in Istanbul.

“There are more drones, they are becoming more sophisticated, and their control logic is getting increasingly complex. That is why our vision is to build a comprehensive counter-UAV ecosystem,” Phantom Defense said.

The company is currently developing its own radar designed to detect Shahed-type drones.

Phantom Defense develops drone detection systems, “soft kill” solutions – electronic warfare systems designed to counter FPV drones and other radio-controlled UAVs – as well as “hard kill” solutions, including interceptor drones, net-launching systems, and turrets.

The company was founded around two years ago in response to the needs of the military during operations in Krynky in the Kherson region, when Ukrainian units faced a shortage of compact and effective EW systems.

Alongside engineers, the company employs former military personnel with combat experience. Phantom Defense says that the combination of engineering expertise and frontline experience allows the company to improve existing developments and create new solutions.

The company’s products undergo several stages of testing, ranging from laboratory evaluations to field trials and testing directly by military units. Afterward, the systems go through codification procedures, including checks for frost resistance, moisture resistance, and compliance with combat performance requirements. Continuous feedback from the front line enables further improvements to the EW systems.

Most of the company’s systems have already been codified, while newer developments are currently undergoing certification.

The company acknowledges the high level of international competition, while emphasizing that the key advantage of Ukrainian solutions is their proven effectiveness in real combat conditions.
