Spike FireFly

Rafael Advanced Defense Systems
Israel

Rafael Spike FireFly is an Israeli miniature loitering munition designed for precision engagement of small targets including hostile UAS through drone-on-drone intercept.

Spike FireFly

System Overview

What It Is

Spike FireFly is a miniature loitering munition developed by Rafael that can be used both as a precision strike weapon against ground targets and as an interceptor against hostile drones. Weighing just 3 kg, it is launched by hand and provides the operator with real-time video for target identification before engaging.

How It Works

The operator launches FireFly by hand and controls it via a tablet, receiving real-time video from its onboard camera. In the counter-UAS role, the operator flies FireFly toward a detected drone threat and maneuvers it for a collision intercept, with the small warhead detonating on impact to destroy the hostile drone. The system can also loiter in an area waiting for a drone threat to appear before executing the intercept.

Primary Capability

Miniature loitering munition for precision engagement of small targets and counter-UAS intercept.

Combat Record / Operational History

Evaluated by the IDF for both ground strike and counter-UAS roles. Operational use details are limited due to classification.

Overview

Rafael's Spike FireFly is a miniature loitering munition that bridges the gap between precision-guided weapons and counter-UAS interceptors. At just 3 kg, it is light enough to be carried and launched by a single soldier, yet capable enough to precisely engage ground targets or intercept hostile drones. This dual-use capability makes FireFly a uniquely versatile tool for infantry units facing both ground and aerial threats.

Development History

Rafael developed Spike FireFly as part of its broader Spike family of precision-guided weapons, applying miniaturization technology to create the smallest member of the family. The development was driven by the recognition that infantry units needed both a tactical loitering munition for precision strikes and an organic counter-UAS capability. FireFly was designed to address both requirements in a single, ultra-lightweight package that adds minimal burden to the dismounted soldier.

Operational Concept

In the counter-UAS role, FireFly provides infantry units with an organic drone-on-drone intercept capability. When a hostile drone is detected — by visual observation, portable sensors, or higher-echelon warning — a soldier launches FireFly and uses the tablet controller to fly it toward the threat. The real-time video feed allows positive identification before engagement, and the operator can abort the attack if the target is identified as friendly. For intercept, the operator maneuvers FireFly into a collision course with the hostile drone, destroying it on impact.

Future Development

Rafael is developing enhanced variants with longer endurance, improved autonomous flight modes for counter-UAS intercept, and enhanced warheads for greater effect. The company is also exploring swarm concepts where multiple FireFly units can be coordinated for defense against multiple simultaneous drone threats.
