The European Union is working with NATO and Ukraine to strengthen its counter-drone capabilities as concerns grow over drone incursions and airspace violations near the alliance’s eastern borders.
Speaking on June 8, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said the EU is actively developing anti-drone measures and accelerating efforts to improve relevant capabilities.
“We are working on this, and of course also hand in hand with NATO to increase these capabilities,” Kallas said in response to questions about progress on European counter-drone initiatives.
Kallas also highlighted the importance of cooperation between Ukraine’s defense industry and European manufacturers, citing Ukraine’s extensive operational experience in drone warfare.
“They have the knowledge when it comes to the drones, and we should not [re]invent the bicycle,” she said, adding that the EU is seeking to make better use of existing funding mechanisms to support joint projects.
