Ukrainian experience for the Middle East: participants share their stories
Several publications last week focused on the involvement of Ukrainian military experts and defence technologies in strengthening the defence capabilities of partner nations in the Gulf.
In an interview, Major Tymur Khromaiev discussed training military personnel in the UAE, the specifics of counter-drone operations in the Middle East, and the future of drones and counter-UAS systems.
Following the outbreak of the US-Israel war against Iran in February 2026, Ukraine deployed more than 200 military instructors to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. Their mission was to train Gulf militaries in countering drones and missiles launched by Iran against US allies in the region. Among them was Major Tymur Khromaiev of the 12th Separate Special Purpose Centre. After returning to Ukraine in mid-May, he spoke with Suspilne News about his experience.
Former Deputy Defence Minister Valery Churkin also shared insights from his work with Middle Eastern partners on Facebook. According to him, he led a Ukrainian team that assisted partners in one of the Gulf countries.
