The world’s first unmanned ground vehicle with an anti-drone laser system has its origins in Austria. As reported the Ziesel UGV platform from Hentschel System will carry the laser system from Inleap Photonics.

The Ziesel UGV is based on the heavy-duty, high-performance electric UGV called ROVO3 from Hawe Mattro in Schwaz, Tyrol.

ROVO3 carries loads of up to 300 kilograms and also supplies them with power if required.

Developed for demanding industrial and off-road applications, the UGV ROVO offers a robust basis for the integration of customer-specific autonomy functions, sensors and operational equipment. As a robust robot platform, it is suitable for industrial, firefighting and rescue tasks as well as for security and military missions. Hawe Mattro’s focus is therefore on the development and sale of a ready-made, purely electric drive platform with a battery exchange system, controlled torque and reliable traction on soft ground, snow, gravel and uneven terrain.

Hentschel System has been using the reliable platform since 2019. According to Matthias Hentschel, Managing Director of Hentschel System, this has also contributed significantly to it being sold as a standard product in its current ROVO3 version and being used by other customers such as Diehl Defense(-> Diehl Defence tests UGV Ziesel in Austria) or ARX Robotics are also being used.

Hentschel System’s contribution to the project is automation and vehicle integration. Mattro supplies a basic UGV with an interface for external control. Hentschel System equips this with the Robotic Kit and sensors for environmental perception such as cameras and lidar sensors. This enables remote-controlled and autonomous operation of the basic platform. The finished UGV from Hentschel System then bears the name Ziesel.

Hentschel System is also integrating the laser system from Inleap Photonics. This is supplied with energy entirely from the robot platform’s main rechargeable batteries with exchange system.

The laser system from Inleap Photonics requires less than 10 kilowatts of laser power. In contrast to conventional laser beam guidance systems that use mirrors, Inleap Photonics uses an optically transmissive medium. This changes its refractive index through electrical signals, allowing the laser beam to be steered extremely quickly and precisely.
