Estonia has deployed its first stationary counter-drone detection and monitoring systems along its border with Russia as the country moves to strengthen security amid growing regional concerns.
According to Estonia’s public broadcaster ERR, the new equipment has been installed by the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) along three sections of the country’s southeastern border between the Estonia-Latvia-Russia tripoint and Luhamaa.
The deployment marks the first phase of a wider initiative aimed at providing counter-drone coverage across Estonia’s entire eastern border by the end of the year.
In addition to the fixed installations, the PPA has introduced mobile radar systems mounted on trailers that can be repositioned to cover difficult terrain and areas with limited visibility along the border.
Head of the Border Guard Veiko Kommusaar said the mobile systems are conventional radar platforms adapted to detect and monitor low-flying drones.
According to ERR, the mobile radar fleet cost nearly €1.3 million, while the first phase of stationary equipment required an investment of approximately €300,000. The full eastern border drone detection infrastructure is expected to be completed next year.
Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro recently inspected progress on the border security project near the Saatse Boot area and the Piusa River. During the visit, Taro confirmed the first systems are operational and said Estonia is continuing efforts to establish a comprehensive drone monitoring network covering the entire border.
The border reinforcement project is also progressing ahead of schedule. Construction work between Koidula and Saatse is expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to ERR.
The initiative is supported in part by European Union funding. Estonia also plans to apply lessons learned from Ukraine by expanding drone detection capabilities beyond the border and into major cities and critical national infrastructure sites.
Elsewhere in the region, Latvia has begun installing 1.5-ton concrete “dragon’s teeth” anti-vehicle barriers along its border with Russia.
The fortifications form part of the wider Baltic Defence Line project, a regional defensive network involving Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland that is scheduled for completion by 2028.
