The Romanian leader said the two presidents agreed to speed up cooperation on the joint production of rapidly deployable unmanned aerial vehicles, citing Ukraine’s battlefield experience and advances in drone technology.
“Ukraine’s battlefield experience and drone technologies are strategic assets for the defense of the entire eastern flank,” Dan wrote on X. He added that Romania would continue investing in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank and supporting Ukraine’s self-defense efforts.
Dan condemned the attack, saying “Russia demonstrates total disregard for international law and innocent civilian lives.”
“This must stop. Russia must end its attacks and engage in meaningful dialogue toward a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” he said.
The drone incident has further strained relations between Bucharest and Moscow.
Earlier Friday, Dan announced the closure of Russia’s consulate general in the Black Sea city of Constanța and the expulsion of the Russian consul general. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova later warned that Moscow would respond to the move.
According to Romania’s defense ministry, a Russian drone struck an apartment building in NATO-member Romania after crossing into the country’s airspace during Moscow’s overnight attacks on Ukraine, during the night of May 28-29.
“One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galați, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, with the impact triggering a fire,” the ministry added, concluding that two people were wounded in the attack.
