Key Takeaways

  • Russian forces employed a combined missile and drone attack against Kyiv.
  • Damage occurred in multiple Kyiv districts (Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi, Obolonskyi).
  • Ukrainian air defense systems were actively engaged, indicating attempts to intercept incoming threats.
  • At least 10 people were rescued from rubble, suggesting significant structural damage.
  • President Zelenskyy anticipated the attacks based on intelligence reports of Russian asset positioning.

Why It Matters

The escalation in attacks, utilizing both missiles and drones, demonstrates Russia’s continued targeting of Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas. The effectiveness of Ukrainian air defenses is being tested, and the anticipated large-scale offensive suggests a potential shift in Russian strategy. This highlights the ongoing need for enhanced Ukrainian air defense capabilities and international support.

People were trapped under rubble after a Russian combined missile and drone attack damaged a residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district early Thursday, causing part of the structure to collapse.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescuers were heading to the scene after preliminary reports indicated that people may have been trapped inside the damaged building.

“In Darnytskyi district, according to preliminary information, structures collapsed in a residential building. Rescuers are heading to the scene,” Klitschko said.

Klitschko later said a search-and-rescue operation was underway.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported that rescuers had pulled 10 people from the rubble.

Air raid sirens sounded and explosions were heard across the city as air defense units engaged incoming targets. Officials reported falling debris and damage in several districts, including Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Holosiivskyi, Solomianskyi and Obolonskyi.

The overnight escalation came after Russia launched a massive daytime drone barrage on Wednesday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier warned of anticipated Russian attacks, citing Ukrainian intelligence reports that Moscow was actively positioning assets for a coordinated, large-scale offensive.
