Key Takeaways

  • Russian FPV and 'Geran' drones targeted Ukrainian civilians, killing two and injuring several.
  • Drone strikes occurred in Nikopol, Chernihiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions.
  • Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 76 out of 93 launched drones overnight.

  • The use of Iranian-designed 'Geran' drones by Russia continues to pose a significant threat.

Why It Matters

The continued use of drones by Russian forces underscores the persistent threat of UAVs in modern warfare, particularly against civilian targets. The effectiveness of Ukrainian air defenses in intercepting a majority of these drones demonstrates both the challenges and successes in counter-UAS operations, highlighting the need for ongoing advancements in air defense technologies.

Russian forces continued their intensified aerial campaign against Ukrainian civilians through Sunday morning, April 5, leaving at least two dead and several others wounded across multiple regions.

In Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region, a first-person view (FPV) drone strike killed one person and left a 60-year-old woman in an  “extremely grave” condition. According to Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Hanzha, the attack also destroyed a civilian vehicle.

This follows a major assault on a Nikopol market just 24 hours earlier that killed five people.

In the Chernihiv region, a man born in 1985 was killed during an evening drone attack on the Snovsk community. Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported that “Geran” drones (aRussian-operated, Iranian-designed one-way attack drones) struck an agricultural enterprise and a vehicle delivering bread. The strikes ignited a five-hectare grass fire and damaged residential property. In total, the region recorded 52 shellings and 80 explosions over the past day.

The offensive also targeted southern Ukraine. In Kherson region, a 40-year-old woman was wounded in Chornobaivka early Sunday morning after a drone dropped an explosive device. She was hospitalized with head injuries and a concussion.

In Mykolaiv region, a married couple – a 45-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman – sustained moderate injuries during a drone strike on the Bereznehuvate community. Regional Head Vitaliy Kim reported that air defenses intercepted six drones over the region, though debris caused fires in Mykolaiv city.

This night, three people were injured during a massive overnight strike that damaged 250 windows in residential apartment blocks in Odesa.

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia launched 93 drones of various types overnight, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas models.

While Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 76 UAVs, 17 impacts were confirmed across 10 locations.
