The Royal Netherlands Navy has declared the V-BAT unmanned aircraft system developed by Shield AI operational following testing aboard HNLMS Johan de Witt.
The tests were conducted off the coast of northern Norway, where the system demonstrated performance in harsh conditions including high winds, sub-zero temperatures and challenging electromagnetic environments.
The Dutch Navy plans to acquire 12 V-BAT systems, with eight vessels to be equipped for their operation as part of efforts to enhance maritime domain awareness.
During testing, the drone carried out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, transmitting real-time video to the ship and supporting decision-making for navigation and target identification.
The V-BAT is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned system with endurance exceeding 12 hours, designed to operate in contested environments, including scenarios with disrupted
