AI Analysis

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has awarded a sole-source contract to NOMAD Global Communication Solution for a mobile counter-drone system. This system will be vehicle-mounted and is designed to detect, track, identify, and neutralize aerial threats in real-time.

Confidence: 85%

Key Takeaways

  • NNSA awarded a sole-source contract to NOMAD for a counter-drone system.
  • The system is vehicle-mounted and provides real-time threat neutralization.
  • NOMAD's solution integrates vehicle infrastructure and command-and-control architecture.
  • The contract is indefinite delivery indefinite quantity, lasting five years.
  • The initiative aims to protect nuclear materials during transport and high-risk operations.

Why It Matters

This development enhances the security of nuclear materials by providing federal agents with advanced tools to counter drone threats during transport. It reflects growing concerns over drone incursions near sensitive facilities and highlights the importance of robust counter-UAS capabilities in national security strategies.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) plans to move forward with a sole-source award for a mobile counter-drone capability, according to a recently posted notice on a procurement site.

The notice, called a Justification for Other than Full and Open Competition, NNSA said NOMAD Global Communication Solution, an engineering and manufacturing company specializing in building mobile command and communications systems, is the only vendor capable of meeting its requirements without long delays or performance risk.

In the justification, NNSA cited the company’s ability to provide a fully integrated, turnkey platform that combines vehicle infrastructure, command-and-control architecture and proprietary power management systems designed for continuous, mission-critical operation.

The effort, led by NNSA’s Office of Secure Transportation, calls for the development and potential procurement of a vehicle-mounted counter-unmanned aircraft system – with unmanned aircraft referring to drones – designed to detect, track, identify and defeat aerial threats in real time. The system would serve as a force multiplier for federal agents responsible for protecting nuclear weapons and materials during transport and other high-consequence operations.

The indefinite delivery indefinite quantity contract will be five years

In March 2025, a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Reps. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) and Susie Lee (D-Nev.) with districts abutting NNSA laboratories, introduced a bill to increase protection of DOE nuclear assets from drones. The bill came after a series of drone sightings near NNSA facilities, and was offered as an amendment to the fiscal 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, but was ultimately not implemented.
